A group calling itself the ‘Coalition of Teachers With Changed Assumption Of Duty Date,’ has described an attempt by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to change the assumption of duty date of its members as an act of “injustice.”

A statement issued by the Coalition revealed the teachers were “recruited within February to November, 2022” and had their Staff IDs in “March 2023.”

 “Instead of GES using our respective assumption of duty (Start date) to pay us, they used their own date which is 1st March, 2023 to pay us, without any reason or notice,” the Coalition stated.

It noted that the decision taken by the “GES has reduced the number of months” they have worked for with more than thousand teachers having been denied four to thirteen months of salaries depending on their original date of assumption of duty.

It further noted that “some teachers who were recruited within the same period had their dates of assumption of duty unchanged and have been paid all arrears. This is an act of injustice, unfairness and discrimination.”

The group indicated that despite writing a petition to the Director-General of the GES for the incident to be addressed, it has not yielded results.

According to the Coalition, the change in the assumption of duty date of newly recruited teachers has brought a “massive debt” on its members.

It stressed that this action taken by the GES will affect the “promotion dates, retirement benefits and a lot more,” of its members.

The group therefore wants the “original date” its members assumed duty to be “restored and all arrears on slashed months” paid.
