The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the prosecution of students who assaulted a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School and compensation for the victim. The association says failure to act will trigger a nationwide sit-down strike.

At a press conference on December 10, NAGRAT’s Eastern Regional Chairman, Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, described the assault as barbaric and unacceptable. A viral video circulating online shows a group of students attacking the teacher as he made his way home.

According to NAGRAT’s preliminary findings, the teacher was enforcing school rules when the students targeted him. The union said teachers at Kade SHTS had to intervene quickly to prevent a retaliatory attack, adding that tensions among staff remain high.

The association noted that this incident is part of a growing pattern of violence against teachers in Ghana. It cited several cases in recent years, including the stabbing of teachers at Takoradi Technical Institute and Christian Methodist Senior High School in 2025, an attack on a teacher at Asuoso SHS in 2024, and assaults at Three Town SHS and the Nungua Cluster of Schools in 2021.

NAGRAT condemned the increasing attacks, stressing that teachers are central to national development and must not work under threats, intimidation or violence. The association said the safety and dignity of teachers are non-negotiable.

NAGRAT called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately arrest and prosecute all students identified in the Kade SHTS video. It also demanded fair compensation for the assaulted teacher.

The union warned that if the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service fail to act within 14 working days, teachers across the country may withdraw their services, a move that could disrupt the 2026 academic calendar. “The patience of teachers has reached its limit,” the association said.

NAGRAT also urged the Ministry of Education, GES, traditional authorities and security agencies to strengthen safety measures in schools. It called for the introduction of a risk allowance for teachers, citing the increasing dangers associated with their work.

The association appealed to the media to continue highlighting teacher safety issues and holding authorities accountable.

NAGRAT described the assault on the Kade SHTS teacher as a national disgrace that must never be repeated and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of educators. It also commended the Director General of GES for acting swiftly to initiate investigations.
