Mary Chinery-Hesse

The University of Ghana Council has officially approved the reappointment of Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse as Chancellor of the university for a second five-year term.

The decision was made during the council's meeting held on July 6, 2023.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse, who became the first female Chancellor of the University of Ghana in 2018, will assume her second term in office from August 1, 2023, until July 31, 2028.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse has had an illustrious career in Ghana's Civil Service and at the United Nations.

She is widely recognised for her expertise in economic and development issues, her advocacy for human and women's rights, and her dedication to African imperatives, conflict resolution, and mediation.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse has achieved significant milestones. She was the first African woman to be appointed as the Resident Coordinator of the UN System and the first African woman to hold the rank of Under Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Her accomplishments extend beyond her role as Chancellor of the University of Ghana. She serves as a Friend of the African Union Panel of the Wise, a Former Chief Advisor to the President of Ghana, a Retired Deputy Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and a Former Vice-Chairperson of the National Development Planning Commission.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse is an alumna of the University of Ghana, and she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the university in 1991, becoming the first female graduate of the university to receive such an honor. In November 2021, she was further recognized with an honorary Doctor of Science Degree in Economics by the University of London. This honorary degree has revitalized the longstanding relationship between the University of Ghana and the University of London, which dates back to the establishment of the University College of the Gold Coast.
