UTAG-KNUST back calls for removal of GTEC leadership, cites incompetence
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-KNUST) has joined calls for the removal of the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, and his Deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.
The decision was taken at an Executive Emergency Meeting held on Monday, January 26, 2026, where the branch resolved to align itself with a similar position earlier announced by UTAG’s University of Ghana branch on January 19, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, UTAG-KNUST criticised the leadership of GTEC, accusing the Commission of being used as a “tool for personal vindictiveness” rather than an institution focused on improving standards in Ghana’s public universities.
The Association outlined several concerns it said underscore the failure of GTEC’s current leadership.
These include worsening student-lecturer ratios, unresolved ambiguities surrounding post-retirement contracts and extensions for office holders, and the lack of clear guidance to finance directors on whether retired lecturers should be removed from university payrolls.
UTAG-KNUST also highlighted the poor state of infrastructure in public universities, noting that many laboratories and lecture halls require urgent renovation, retooling and expansion.
According to the Association, these challenges have left university management “helpless” and are undermining efforts to deliver quality tertiary education to students across the country.
The branch, therefore, appealed to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency to advise President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Director-General and Deputy Director-General of GTEC on grounds of incompetence.
UTAG-KNUST further called on Prof. Abdulai and Prof. Ocloo to voluntarily resign by January 31, 2026, warning that failure to address their concerns could lead to further industrial action.
