9 bodies retrieved from collapsed Gbane mining pit
Some nine bodies have been retrieved from a flooded mine that caved in at Moabak near Gbane in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.
First responders, including personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Police Service and Ghana National Fire Service worked together for more than 48 hours to retrieve the bodies.
The victims have been trapped in the pit since Monday, 31 May 2021.
Heavy rains flooded and weakened the pit, resulting in the collapse.
Six of the miners came out of the pit before the disaster.
Rescuers used excavators and other heavy-duty machines to retrieve the bodies.
The rescue team is still searching for more bodies.
