A/R: Asonomaso residents appeal for toilet facility to end open defecation

Residents of Asonomaso, a community in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region, are raising urgent concerns over the lack of a proper toilet facility, which they say is forcing many to resort to open defecation.
In interviews with some residents, they revealed that the absence of a functional public toilet has left them with no choice but to defecate along roadsides, at refuse dumps, and in nearby bushes.
According to them, the only existing facility is in a deplorable and in a dangerous state, having received no maintenance for several years.
“The situation is very worrying. We are exposed to serious health risks,” one resident lamented.
The Assembly Member for the area, Isaac Badu, confirmed the community’s challenges, stating that the current facility poses a safety hazard and has effectively become a death trap.
He said numerous appeals and letters sent to the Municipal Assembly for assistance have so far yielded no results.
“The absence of a proper toilet facility has worsened sanitation conditions in Asonomaso.
Despite our persistent calls for help, nothing has been done,” he said.
To address the issue, Mr Badu noted that the community has taken the initiative to raise funds toward the construction of a new toilet facility in order to prevent potential outbreaks of disease and improve sanitation standards.
Residents are appealing to the government, the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly, NGOs, and benevolent individuals to support their efforts and bring relief to the community.
