A/R: Monday rains kill 2

General News
Two people have drowned following torrential rains that flooded parts of the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, and its adjoining districts on Monday, 20 May 2019.

Mr Kofi Appiagyie, a 32-year-old taxi driver, drowned in Pelele River at Asawase when he attempted to cross a footbridge that links Dechemso and Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.

Eyewitnesses told Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah that Mr Appiagyie, who was allegedly drunk, slipped and fell into the flooded river.

All efforts by some residents to rescue him proved futile.

In a related development, Ms Krosiya Awudu, a nine-year-old girl also drowned while playing with her peers in the heavy downpour that started around 3:30 p.m. and lasted for about two hours at Tafo Zongo in the Old Tafo Municipality.

Her mother, Salamatu Awudu said the little girl went out, on her blindside, after having done the dishes.

A rescue team is still searching for the bodies of the duo.

Monday's rain caused havoc to properties in Kumasi and displaced many people.

Some areas flooded by the rains include Atafoa, Dechemso, Airport Roundabout, Kumasi Central Market, Krofrom, Tafo Nhyiaeso Road, Ahinsan, and Anloga Junction among others.
