Ama Governor, 8 other Democracy Hub protesters granted 70k bail each
Nine Democracy Hub activists including Ama Governor have been granted bail following their arrest during a protest against illegal mining.
The bail for each individual was set at GHS70,000 with two sureties, along with conditions requiring them to report to the police weekly and surrender their Ghana cards to the court registry.
This court ruling came after an appeal successfully overturned a prior decision by the circuit court, which had denied bail to the nine protesters.
They were part of a larger group of 53 individuals charged with offenses including unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assaulting a public officer, and conduct likely to breach the peace.
Despite strong opposition from the state, the court granted the defense's bail application, resulting in the release of Ama Governor and the eight others—Emmanuel Gyan, Emmanuel Kwabena Addo, Ziblim Yakubu, Oheneba Prempeh, Philip Owusu Kobina, Desmond Akisbik, Von Coffie, and Sadik Yakubu.
The charges against them stem from their alleged involvement in a protest that reportedly turned disruptive while opposing illegal mining activities in the country.
Meanwhile, the bail denial of other activists, including Oliver Barker Vormawor, Felicity Nelson, and 10 others, is still under review by the courts.
The release of these activists follows growing pressure from both local and international protesters. Demonstrations erupted in Ghana, with activists staging a three-day protest demanding the release of the detainees.
Protesters held signs with slogans like “Free the Protesters” and “Justice for Democracy,” emphasising the need for the government to respect citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
