Association of authors and publishers hike prices of books
The Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers has announced a price hike for books targeting preschool children, primary, junior high, and senior high schools, effective September 2024.
During a press conference held today in Kumasi, the association's President, Mr. John Akwasi Amponsah, disclosed that wholesale prices for preschool children's books will now range from GHS50 to GHS60, up from the previous range of GHS35 to GHS38.
Furthermore, Mr. Amponsah stated that prices for primary school textbooks, previously ranging from GHS50 to GHS60, will now be sold at prices ranging from GHS60 to GHS80.
For junior high and senior high school books, which previously ranged from GHS50 to GHS80, prices will see a significant increase, ranging from GHS80 to GHS180.
Mr. Amponsah attributed these price adjustments to escalating port charges and the Value Added Tax (VAT).
He called upon the government to reconsider certain port charges, including the COVID-19 levy and AU levy, while also urging the withdrawal of the Value Added Tax (VAT).
