Bagbin recalls Parliament to reconvene at AICC, Nov. 7
The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has summoned Members of Parliament for a critical session on Thursday, 7 November, to address urgent national matters.
The recall, announced on Thursday, 31 October 2024, was issued in accordance with Article 112 (3) of the Constitution and Standing Orders 5 and 53, which grant the Speaker authority to convene Parliament in the public interest.
The sitting will begin at 10 a.m. at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), where parliamentary activities have temporarily moved during renovations to the main chamber.
While the specific agenda remains undisclosed, the timing hints at the gravity of issues awaiting parliamentary review.
This recall follows Speaker Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, after escalating disputes over parliamentary majority representation.
The session became heated as MPs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) grappled over dominance in the House.
There was a recent directive from the Supreme Court, requiring Speaker Bagbin to hold off on implementing his ruling that declared four seats vacant.
Also, on Wednesday, 30 October 2024, the Supreme Court reinforced its initial directive by denying Speaker Bagbin’s application to halt the order, intensifying the legal pressures at play as Parliament prepares to reconvene.
