Bawumia opens 1,072-unit Kpone affordable housing project and launches "decade of housing" initiative

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has opened the 1,072-unit Kpone Affordable Housing Project, signalling the successful completion of Phases 1 to 3 of the initiative. The event, held on Monday, November 25, 2024, also marked the beginning of Phase 4, which aims to deliver an additional 800 homes, bringing the total to 1,872 units.
The project was initially launched in 2006 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor but stalled during the Mills and Mahama administrations due to funding challenges.
However, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration revived and completed the project, fulfilling its pledge to provide quality, affordable housing for Ghanaians.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling Ghana’s 1.8 million housing deficit through innovative solutions.
He outlined plans for a “Decade of Housing Programme” to drive sustainable housing development across the nation.
“We have seen the transformative impact of the ‘Year of Roads.’ Now, we envision a ‘Decade of Housing’ to address Ghana’s urgent housing needs.
Through public-private partnerships, as demonstrated with the National Home Ownership Fund, we aim to significantly reduce the housing deficit,” he stated.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of a robust housing and mortgage sector, noting that many advanced economies leverage trillions of dollars through housing to support and stabilize their economies.
He highlighted the economic benefits of affordable housing, such as job creation and broader economic growth.
In addition to the Kpone Affordable Housing Project, Dr. Bawumia toured nearby sites of the National Housing Fund (NHF) estates, which are currently under construction and expected to add 534 new homes to the national housing stock.
The Vice President concluded by affirming the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to building a vibrant housing sector, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
He urged Ghanaians to support their agenda for sustainable housing development in the upcoming elections.
