Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called on Board Members across both the public and private sectors to demonstrate boldness and a clear understanding of their institutional mandates in order to drive sustainable progress.

He cautioned that a lack of understanding of organisational operations by board members could lead to institutional collapse. Mr. Debrah made these remarks when he received a delegation of convenors and participants of the upcoming Second Boardroom Governance Summit, scheduled for October in Accra, during a courtesy call at the Presidency.

"The effectiveness of a board is not in its formality, but in the ability of its members to make informed and courageous decisions," he stated.

"Poor comprehension of institutional functions by board members is a dangerous recipe for failure."

He therefore encouraged CEOs and board members to participate in the summit, emphasising the need for continuous learning and dialogue around effective governance practices.

Also speaking at the meeting, President’s Counsel Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong highlighted the far-reaching impact of sound boardroom governance.

She noted that good governance practices are central to the Reset Agenda being championed by President John Mahama.

"Strong governance at the board level creates a ripple effect that enhances the efficiency, credibility, and long-term success of organisations," she said.

The convenor of the summit, Prof Douglas Boateng, stressed that while Ghana has never lacked vision or well-articulated policies, what has often been missing are resilient governance structures that transcend political cycles and personal agendas.

"Our challenge as a nation has never been ideas. It has always been about implementation, and that boils down to governance.

We must build structures that are fit for purpose, beyond short-term interests," Prof Boateng remarked.

The Second Boardroom Governance Summit is expected to bring together board chairs, CEOs, policymakers, and governance experts to explore solutions that strengthen leadership and accountability across institutions in Ghana.
