The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Catholic Bishops' Conference (GCBC) have supported the decision of the Methodist Church and the Wesley Girls’ High School authorities to prevent Muslim students from observing the Ramadan fast.

The religious groups in a joint statement said ”We wish to endorse the position of the Methodist Church of Ghana”.

"The leadership of the CCG and GCBC, therefore, wish to state that we took strong exception to the directive of the Ghana Education Service issued in their press release on May 1 2021," the statement further noted.

The statement explained that mission schools have been guided by religious traditions of the respective churches from their inception in the country.

“Even in the more advanced democracies in the world, such a space is granted the various churches in the running of their respective mission schools.

“Therefore, we respectfully wish to state that the Ministry of Education, GES or any other stakeholder must not undermine the Codes of Conduct of the various mission schools, which have ensured their discipline and high academic standards for almost two centuries in Ghana,” the statement added.

The issue at Wesley Girls' High School has sparked a lot of conversation on traditional and social media.

Several Ghanaians, Muslims and non-Muslims have held divergent views on the matter.

Meanwhile, #GeyHeyMuslimsSpeak is trending on Facebook and Twitter.

The hashtag is being used particularly by old students of the school to share their experiences as Muslims in the school.
