Adwoa Safo receiving initial care at hospital

Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has strongly rejected widespread claims that she was armed or discharged a weapon during a recent violent confrontation at her younger brother’s residence in Kwabenya.

Speaking with journalists from her hospital bed where she is currently receiving treatment, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection addressed what she described as false and misleading social media narratives.

"I don't own a gun, I didn't shoot a gun and I will never shoot a gun," Safo stated firmly, reacting to allegations that she was an active participant in the gunfire.

"A Purely Family Matter"

According to Adwoa Safo, her visit to the residence of her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo 'Akofena' Safo, was strictly motivated by family obligations.

She explained that she arrived at the property entirely alone and without any security detail, firmly believing the situation was an internal family matter that required no provocation or force.

She strongly rebuffed allegations from critics — whom she termed "propagandists" — that she had intentionally used her vehicle to ram the estate's entrance gates before the shooting started.

Pointing to the ongoing police investigation, Adwoa Safo challenged the public and journalists to examine her vehicle.

She noted that aside from the bullet holes and shattering caused by oncoming gunfire, the car shows absolutely no structural signs of a collision.

Dangerous Injuries Revealed

The gravity of the confrontation has been underscored by Adwoa Safo's medical team.

She revealed that diagnostic imaging and medical examinations conducted after her admission uncovered a highly volatile situation: doctors found bullet pellets and fragments of shattered glass lodged precariously close to her brain.

The medical update follows growing public anxiety regarding the severity of her injuries following the June 21, 2026, incident.

Church Succession Dispute Turns Violent

The shooting is rooted in a simmering leadership struggle within the Kristo Asafo Mission, which has intensified since the passing of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo 'Kankanka'.

A previous statement from the Kwadwo Safo family alleged that the former lawmaker had arrived at the residence to serve a court injunction meant to stop a planned installation ceremony for Israel Kwadwo Safo as the new leader of the church. According to that account, the encounter quickly deteriorated into a physical confrontation involving gunfire, resulting in multiple injuries and heavy property damage.

The church remains deeply fractured over the succession rules. One faction maintains that the late founder explicitly chose Israel Safo to lead, while another faction counters that subsequent amendments altered those directives, sparking ongoing legal battles.

Ammunition Seized, Three Arrested

The Ghana Police Service has since launched a full criminal investigation.

On June 22, Israel Kwadwo Safo turned himself in at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters before being moved to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters.

A subsequent police search of his vehicle and home uncovered a massive cache of weapons and ammunition, including:

- 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition

- 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition

- 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition

- Multiple loaded magazines

- Two Glock pistols (one registered under his name)

Two other individuals, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, have also been taken into custody.

All three suspects are currently assisting authorities with inquiries and are scheduled to appear in court as the police work to establish definitive criminal liability for the violence.
