Editor challenges legality of Special Prosecutor's office

Mr Kenneth Kuranchie, a former member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and 2024 independent parliamentary candidate, has filed a writ at the Supreme Court against the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng. Mr Kuranchie who is also the Managing Editor of Searchlight newspaper is seeking a declaration that the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and its powers are unlawful.
Mr Kuranchie argues that the OSP’s powers of arrest, detention, freezing, and seizure are abusive.
He is also seeking to place the OSP’s prosecutorial powers under the direct control of the Attorney General, similar to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Police, and National Investigation Bureau (NIB).
The writ follows a petition filed by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, calling for Agyebeng’s removal. However, the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, dismissed the petition on Friday, July 5, deeming it baseless and without merit.
