GUTA condemns GTEC over targeting of Joseph Obeng for honorary doctorate title

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has issued a strong condemnation of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) over what it describes as a “malicious attempt” to discredit its President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, regarding his use of an honorary doctorate title.

In a statement released on Monday, GUTA, along with its allied trade organisations, accused GTEC of overstepping its mandate by cautioning Dr. Obeng against the use of his honorary title.

The Association described the move as an “unwarranted and calculated attempt” to tarnish the reputation of a man whose contributions to Ghana’s informal sector and entrepreneurial ecosystem have been transformative.

“We find this action to be an overreach of authority—an unwarranted, malicious attempt calculated to cast aspersions on the person and dignity of a leader whose dedication, vision, and advocacy have been pivotal in transforming the economic narratives of our country,” the statement read.

GUTA emphasised that Dr. Obeng's honorary title was not merely symbolic but a recognition of decades of service to national development, economic empowerment, and private enterprise advocacy.

The Association cited two notable honours conferred on Dr. Obeng in 2016:

An Honorary Doctorate of Humanity from Alpha International Theological Seminary for his contribution to human development and private enterprise.

A Platinum Award for Excellence in Leadership by the Centre for Transformational Leadership, recognising his leadership in business and national development.

“These are not vanity accolades; they are meritorious honours granted by reputable institutions, recognising proven leadership and measurable impact,” GUTA asserted.

Calling for a public apology and retraction, the Association urged GTEC to exercise “discretion and professionalism” when addressing figures of national prominence, and to consult relevant stakeholders before making public pronouncements that could damage reputations.

“We affirm that Dr. Obeng’s leadership and advocacy transcend academic credentials.

His contributions are felt in markets, boardrooms, and national policy discussions,” the statement continued.

GUTA concluded by reaffirming its unwavering support for Dr. Obeng, describing him as a “symbol of resilience, service, and visionary leadership” who has uplifted thousands of traders and entrepreneurs across Ghana.
