Ghana to host 80th anniversary of the 5th Pan -Pan-African Congress in Accra
Ghana will host the 80th anniversary commemoration of the historic 5th Pan-African Congress, originally held in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1945 — a landmark gathering that helped shape Africa’s liberation movements.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Accra addressed by Comrade Kwesi Pratt, where he outlined plans for a major international conference under the theme: “From Historical Memory to Economic and Political Justice: Uniting African Progressive Forces.”
According to Mr Pratt Jnr, a member of the Coordinating Council, the event will convene participants from over 50 countries across Africa and the Caribbean, including political parties, trade unions, youth and student groups, women’s and peasant organisations, as well as other mass-based movements dedicated to African unity and progress.
The conference will feature notable African scholars and leaders such as Comrade Ivan Jim, General Secretary of the Metal Workers Union of South Africa; Professor Ikwe Britwum; and Dr. Gamal Nkrumah Adam.
His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, who serves as the African Union Champion on Reparations, has also graciously accepted an invitation to deliver a keynote address.
Organisers emphasised that the commemoration is not only a reflection on Africa’s liberation history but also a call to action — urging Africans to reassert their economic and political rights in a global system still shaped by inequalities and neocolonial influence.
They underscored the urgent need for a new model of economic and social development to free the continent from dependency and exploitation, echoing the spirit of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, under whose leadership Ghana hosted the All-African People’s Conference in 1958.
The organising committee also called on the media to serve as strategic partners in promoting African unity, justice, and development, noting that informed public engagement remains crucial to advancing the Pan-African vision.
