Gov't, Yagbonwura hold talks to end Gbiniyiri clashes
A high-powered government delegation led by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has met with the King and Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, to deliberate on the recent violent clashes at Gbiniyiri in the Tuna Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
The closed-door meeting sought to find a lasting solution to the conflict, which has claimed several lives, destroyed property, and displaced thousands of residents.
Speaking after the engagement, Minister Muntaka reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to restoring peace and called on all stakeholders, particularly traditional leaders and the youth, to support the peace process.
“All have genuine concerns. What talking can solve, guns cannot solve. After our lengthy discussions, we are hopeful that the agreements reached will be respected by all sides so that peace can return,” he said.
To reinforce stability, the government has stepped up security operations in the area, with joint patrols by immigration officers, the police, and the military along the border stretch.
The Interior Minister also disclosed that Ghana is working closely with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire to prevent the conflict from spilling across borders.
“We are engaging our colleagues across the borders for all of us to hold the line and ensure this conflict does not spread,” he noted.
Hon. Muntaka further revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is deeply concerned about the situation and has directed urgent measures to restore calm.
“The President is showing leadership and pushing to ensure this conflict is resolved as soon as possible so peace will be restored,” he stressed.
The Gbiniyiri clashes have left several people dead, properties destroyed, and many residents displaced, with humanitarian concerns mounting.
