Gov’t committed to engaging stakeholders for environmental protection, sustainable mining – Info Ministry

The Ministry of Information has reaffirmed government’s commitment to combating illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, as the country faces mounting environmental damage and growing discontent among citizens.
In a statement issued on Friday, 4 October 2024, the Ministry highlighted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s determination to work alongside key stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to the destructive mining activities.
The statement comes on the heels of a high-stakes meeting between President Akufo-Addo and Organised Labour, following threats by the union to embark on a nationwide strike effective Thursday, 10 October 2024, if government does not intensify efforts to curb galamsey.
Organised Labour, which represents various worker unions, has voiced its frustration over the severe environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, including the pollution of water bodies and the destruction of farmlands and forest reserves.
In response, the Ministry emphasised government’s multi-pronged approach to address the galamsey crisis, highlighting inclusivity as a core strategy.
The statement added: “Government is committed to engaging all stakeholders in pursuit of sustainable mining and environmental protection.”
