Help save Accra Parks and Gardens lands from encroachers- Eco-Conscious Citizens beg Ghanaians
Days after Environmentalist Group, Eco-Conscious Citizens demanded an audit of all parks and gardens lands across the country, the group is back with another plea.
This time, to all well-meaning Ghanaians to help wrestle the parks and gardens lands located at Cantonments here in Accra from an alleged private developer.
Class News checks have revealed that the alleged private developer has mounted two containers, laying claim to the piece of disputed land.
The developer subsequently deployed about 7 heavily built men are currently stationed there to ward off any persons who attempted entry, a situation which resulted in a heated confrontation with staff at parks and gardens headquarters.
Acting National Director of Parks and Gardens, Daniel K Adams tells class news that the developer identified as one Rev Dr Ezekiel owns Danny Ike Estate Developers Ltd.
In an exclusive interview with Class FM’s Kwame Okyere Junior, Mr Daniel Adams expressed utter dismay that the developer claimed ownership of the land belonging to them and indicated he had documents to that effect.
“We are shocked. This land was given to us by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah ever since the department was established in 1961 and we are surprised that a private individual is claiming ownership of the land”, he said.
He said, the matter has been reported to the Cantonment Police and they are ready to settle the matter in court to protect the state land.
“I don’t know what is happening in this country whereby government land can be taken by anybody anyhow, how can you take Parks and Gardens Land given to us in 1961, so what we are going to do is that, they should take their container from the land and we are going to develop the place into an event centre to generate more money for government”, he said.
Meanwhile, speaking on the Class 91.3FM’s midday bulletin, 12 live on April 4, 2024, environmentalist and founder of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah revealed that a meeting has been scheduled for Monday, 8th April, 2024 for the trespassers to produce their documents to ascertain who purported to give them the land etc. However, she adds that the situation may result in a legal action where the purported lease may have to be set aside in court.
She however rallied the support of all Ghanaians to ensure that the parks and gardens land at Accra and the other parts of the country are well protected.
She reiterated that their earlier demand for a thorough audit still stands.
