Mr Karim Asad Ahmad Khan, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), is in Ghana for a three-day working visit, following an invitation from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

He arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Sunday, October 13, 2024, where he was welcomed by GIMPA's Rector, Prof Samuel Kwaku Bonsu, and the Dean of GIMPA Law School, Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Budu.

During his visit, Mr Khan will engage in courtesy meetings with key Ghanaian officials, including the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame; Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo; Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin; and the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

As part of his itinerary, Mr Khan will deliver GIMPA Law School's third eminent public lecture, titled “Democracy, Elections and Impunity: International Criminal Justice as a Deterrent.” Additionally, he will hold a special Q&A session with law students enrolled in the Master of Laws (LL.M) programme focused on international criminal law and justice.

Mr Khan is expected to conclude his visit and depart Ghana on Wednesday, October 16.

Profile of Karim Khan

Karim Khan KC specializes in various fields, including public international law, international criminal and human rights law, sports law, international arbitration, extradition, media law, and major commercial fraud cases.

He has represented states, individuals, and victim groups, and has experience as a senior Crown prosecutor for the Law Commission of England and Wales.

Mr Khan also served in the Office of the Prosecutor at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

In 2018, he was appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the first special advisor and head of the UN team investigating international crimes committed by ISIL/Da’esh/al-Qaeda through the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD).

On June 16, 2021, he was sworn in for a nine-year term as Chief Prosecutor of the ICC in The Hague
