Labour Commission directs PSWU to suspend strike action

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to immediately call off its ongoing strike.
The directive came after a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, involving the PSWU and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The PSWU strike, which began on October 21, was in protest over the government’s failure to pay institution-specific allowances that the union claims are due under the single spine salary structure.
These allowances, the union argues, are essential compensations owed to their member organizations, including the Electoral Commission, the Statistical Service, and the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), among others.
The industrial action has disrupted operations in these key public institutions.
In addition to ordering an end to the strike, the NLC has directed both parties to resume negotiations on the disputed allowances by October 31, 2024.
The outcome of these talks must be communicated to the NLC by November 6, 2024.
The Commission also urged both sides to negotiate in good faith to find a resolution to the ongoing impasse.
