Mahama warns VRA leadership: No room for repeat of dam spillage disaster
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm warning to the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, and his deputies, stating that any recurrence of the devastating Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillage will lead to their dismissal.
In a national address on the progress of his administration’s 120-day social contract, President Mahama reaffirmed his government's commitment to accountability and disaster prevention.
“We will not tolerate a repeat of the destruction caused by the recent spillage.
The leadership of the VRA will be held personally responsible if it happens again,” the President declared.
Mahama also confirmed that his administration has fulfilled its pledge to launch an official probe into the incident.
He revealed that the Minister for Energy had inaugurated a five-member investigative committee, chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi, to examine the circumstances surrounding the spillage.
According to the President, the committee has since submitted its findings, recommending a series of preventive measures.
These include the development of a controlled spill flood plan and the implementation of engineering solutions downstream to better manage flood risks.
President Mahama emphasised that the recommendations will be enforced to ensure public safety and to prevent the recurrence of such large-scale destruction in vulnerable communities.
