NAiMOS strike in Eastern Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) taskforce has launched a major crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Eastern Region, targeting notorious galamsey hubs in Oda Nkwanta (Birim Central Municipality) and Akanteng-Asamankese.

The coordinated operation, conducted over the weekend, uncovered two active illegal mining sites hidden deep within forested areas near Akanteng.

At the sites, the taskforce discovered six excavators, some concealed in thick bushes to evade detection.

According to officials, two of the excavators were found intact and immobilised on-site, while four others had been stripped of their control systems, suggesting an attempt by the illegal operators to disable evidence and avoid seizure.

Local residents told reporters that the illegal mining operations had severely polluted nearby streams and tributaries, including one that feeds directly into the River Birim, a critical water source for communities in the region.

The contamination has reportedly affected access to clean water and disrupted farming activities in surrounding villages.

A NAiMOS spokesperson confirmed that the operation forms part of a nationwide offensive against illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s rivers, forests, and farmlands.

He reiterated the government’s resolve to restore degraded lands, protect water bodies, and hold offenders accountable.

“We are sending a clear message — the destruction of Ghana’s environment for selfish gain will not be tolerated.

NAiMOS will continue to work with the security agencies and local authorities to ensure the law is enforced,” the spokesperson said.

Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the illegal operations, while the immobilised equipment remains under security guard pending further directives.

Environmental groups and community leaders in the Eastern Region have commended NAiMOS for the swift intervention, urging sustained enforcement to permanently end illegal mining in the area
