NMC cacks down on media over offensive content, signals possible sanctions

The National Media Commission (NMC) has taken a tough stance on offensive broadcasting, warning media houses across Ghana to exercise greater caution with content or face possible sanctions.

Addressing concerns during a regulatory session on Thursday, 31 October 2024, NMC Chairman Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo highlighted the need for responsible programming, citing the commission’s readiness to penalise those found in breach of broadcasting standards.

The NMC’s recent report revealed that nearly 9,000 complaints have been logged this year, with issues ranging from sexually explicit content to allegations of money laundering and loan fraud, implicating over 40 media organisations.

Oyerepa TV, specifically named for airing inappropriate material, responded with disappointment over its mention in the report.

Nevertheless, the NMC defended its stance, warning that Oyerepa TV’s broadcasts posed a “significant harm” and hinting it might refer the case to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to consider license revocation.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) also weighed in, criticising the NCA’s handling of the digital migration process and questioning its enforcement of broadcasting standards.

In response, the NCA assured the public of its active role in monitoring and regulation.
