O/R: Irate youth seize excavator for prospecting for iron ore

A tense situation has erupted in Asato, a farming community in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region, where around 100 angry youths have obstructed a mining company from prospecting for iron ore.
The African Exploration Minerals Group had begun prospecting in the area after the Ghana Geological Survey's feasibility study revealed significant iron ore deposits.
The youths, wearing red bands and chanting war songs, claimed they were not informed about the prospecting activities and expected proper engagement from the company before any exploration commenced.
Mr. Boakye Danquah Budu, the Assemblyman of Asato Electoral Area, explained to the media that the youth became incensed upon discovering that heavy-duty mining machines had been brought into the Asato forest zone without prior community notification.
He emphasized that the secrecy surrounding the entry of the equipment fueled the youths' anger and their decision to halt the exploration activities.
“Nobody in Asato is an animal; we need broader consultation on the prospecting of iron ore in the Asato enclave,” Budu added, stressing the need for the community to be informed about their stakes.
However, Osabarima Osei Bonsu V, the Paramount Chief of Asato Traditional Area, refuted the youths' claims, stating that there had been a community engagement in 2023 regarding the prospecting activities.
He clarified that the company was currently assessing the viability of the iron ore and that actual exploration would not start for another two years.
