Six convicted in GES payroll scandal; over GHS 106,000 recovered

The High Court in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, has convicted six individuals for their involvement in a payroll corruption scheme within the Ghana Education Service (GES), which led to the illegal payment of salaries to a non-existent employee.
The convictions were secured through the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) plea bargaining framework, resulting in guilty pleas and full restitution of the stolen funds to the State.
The convicted individuals, comprising school administrators, payroll officers, and accountants, were found to have facilitated the illegal validation and reactivation of salary payments for a teacher who had vacated his post. Their actions resulted in the wrongful payment of over GHS 86,000.
However, with additional funds recovered, the total amount retrieved now stands at GHS 106,319.64.
The OSP revealed that this case is part of a broader investigation into systemic payroll irregularities.
Several other suspects are currently being pursued in connection with similar offences.
As part of its intensified anti-corruption drive, the OSP is prosecuting six additional criminal cases in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi, aiming to clamp down on corruption and safeguard public funds.
The office reaffirmed its commitment to holding public officials accountable and restoring integrity in the management of state resources.
