Today is world Human Rights Day
Today, December 10, the world observes International Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, in Paris.
This groundbreaking document affirms the inalienable rights of all individuals, regardless of gender, race, colour, language, political affiliation, nationality, or religion.
The UDHR underscores the right to life, liberty, security, freedom of speech, and protection for marginalized groups, emphasizing that the exercise of one’s rights should not infringe upon the rights of others.
This Year’s Theme: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”The 2024 theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” highlights the urgent need to empower individuals by fostering awareness of their rights as a foundation for shaping a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable future.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of the theme, stating, “Human rights are under assault.
This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are about building the future right now.
We must stand up for all rights always.”
This year’s commemoration is a rallying cry for individuals, governments, and institutions to address critical issues like racial justice, gender equality, and freedom of expression.
It calls on everyone to speak out against human rights violations, hate speech, and misinformation, while actively working to promote tolerance and understanding.
As Guterres pointed out, “Human rights are the foundation for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.” Awareness of these rights is not only a shield against injustice but also a powerful tool to foster unity and harmony among people.
Human rights are fundamental to our daily lives, shaping how societies function and ensuring protection against discrimination and injustice. By knowing and exercising these rights, individuals contribute to creating a more peaceful and just world.
This International Human Rights Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to these principles and work collectively to safeguard them for future generations.
