VRA hosts precautionary spillage workshop in Central Tongu district

The Volta River Authority (VRA) on Thursday, July 11, 2024 held a one-day workshop in the Central Tongu District to prepare for a planned precautionary spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
Stakeholders and community members attended the event, which focused on discussing potential impacts, evacuation plans, and distribution of farm inputs to affected victims.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), over 3,000 bags of fertilisers have been distributed among victims, and resettlement efforts are ongoing.
Validation exercises are also being conducted for a simulation exercise to ensure preparedness.
The VRA in a projected presentation announced that the planned spillage will release 50,000 CFS of water, which will largely remain within the river channel, however, areas like Siamekome, Atsukope, and parts of Awadiwoekome Island may experience minimal impacts.
VRA assured that communities along the river banks and islands will be informed and evacuated before the spillage.
The District Chief Executive for the Central Tongu District, Thomas Moore Zonyrah, reiterated the government's commitment to resettling affected communities through the works and housing ministry.
Several meetings with the Inter-ministerial committee have been held, and plans are underway to complete ongoing projects, secure additional land for future projects, and construct over 250 housing units.
Farm inputs and agrochemicals are also being distributed among victims.
The workshop aimed to ensure preparedness and minimize potential risks to communities in the Central Tongu District.
