Volta Regional Minister intervenes to ensure water supply for hospitals and institutions

In response to the ongoing water crisis in the Volta Region, Regional Minister James Gunu has taken steps to facilitate the supply of water to hospitals and key institutions at a reduced cost.
The situation has left residents struggling daily to access water, following the breakdown of pumps at the Kpeve headworks—the fourth of such failure in a month—leading to a complete halt in supply for the past two weeks.
Recognizing the critical impact on essential services, Minister Gunu has engaged with water suppliers to negotiate a lower price for hospitals and institutions, ensuring they can continue to operate efficiently.
A visit to the Ho Teaching Hospital confirmed that the initiative is already in effect.
Speaking on the development, Amos Gya, Public Relations Officer of Ho Teaching Hospital, revealed that the hospital now pays GHC 650 for a 10,000-litre polytank of water, down from over GHC 1,000.
"The Regional Minister's role is not to pay for the water but to facilitate negotiations with suppliers, ensuring hospitals get water at a lower cost," Gya explained.
He urged hospital caregivers to use the water judiciously and maintain cleanliness, particularly in restrooms.
While the minister’s initiative provides temporary relief, Gya appealed to authorities to fast-track repairs at the Kpeve headworks to restore a stable water supply to the region.
Residents and institutions alike hope for a long-term solution to prevent further disruptions in the future.
