Zoomlion's huge sanitation infrastructure unparalleled — Ahmed Ibrahim

Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has lauded Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its unmatched sanitation infrastructure, positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable waste management in West Africa.
The Minister highlighted Zoomlion’s modern recycling facilities and sewage-to-resource technologies, which convert waste into compost and charcoal.
He expressed this admiration for Zoomlion while speaking on Accra 100.5 FM's Citizen Show hosted by Nana Ama Agyarko on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
Mr Ibrahim noted that the nationwide network of recycling plants and faecal waste management systems implemented by Zoomlion aligns with Ghana’s 2016 ban on ocean dumping of faecal waste, a policy introduced under John Dramani Mahama to curb coastal pollution.
He emphasized the drastic reduction in cholera cases, attributing it to the advanced waste management systems established by the company.
Despite the successes, the Minister raised concerns over a GHS 1.2 billion debt owed to Zoomlion, inherited from the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
He stressed that the government is actively collaborating with the company to address waste management challenges, particularly in recycling plastic waste.
Mr. Ibrahim called for strengthened partnerships between the government and private waste management firms to complete the waste infrastructure transformation agenda.
Linking recent cholera outbreaks in coastal cities, including Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi, to gaps in public sanitation education, the Minister urged intensified advocacy to reduce reckless waste disposal in collaboration with the media.
“Zoomlion’s work transcends mere street cleaning; it’s about safeguarding national health and promoting environmental sustainability,” he stated, calling for continued collaboration between public and private sectors to maintain sanitation gains.
