Doctors stepping in for nusrses during strike

As the nationwide nurses' and midwives' strike enters its critical phase, medical doctors at Kumasi's Maternal and Child Health Hospital have voluntarily assumed additional duties to ensure uninterrupted patient care.

The hospital's management brokered the intervention following emergency discussions after striking healthcare workers completely withdrew services.

Dr. Nii Oku Aryee, Medical Superintendent of the facility, confirmed to Kumasi FM that while operational capacity is reduced, the hospital continues to provide essential services.

"Our doctors have made personal sacrifices to cover critical gaps.

Patients arriving at our facility are receiving care, and we remain committed to maintaining healthcare standards," Dr. Aryee stated.

However, the hospital has noted a significant drop in patient numbers – a trend Dr. Aryee attributes to widespread media coverage of the industrial action, creating public uncertainty about available services.

While the hospital maintains it is operational, some patients reported being turned away.

Dr. Aryee clarified that these incidents likely occurred when patients presented at closed units or during triage assessments.

"We're redirecting cases appropriately, but understand the frustration when expectations don't match reality during this challenging period," he added.

The hospital administration has implemented emergency protocols prioritising maternal and pediatric emergencies while appealing for patience from the public.
