Ghana Medical Trust Fund steps in to support 2-year-old battling rare cancer
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund has swiftly intervened to support two-year-old Meshack, a young boy diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft-tissue cancer.
According to officials, the Fund became aware of Meshack’s condition last week and immediately reached out to his family to offer assistance.
Within 48 hours, a team led by the Fund’s Administrator, Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, visited the Oncology Unit of the Department of Child Health at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region, where a cheque presentation was made to kick-start the child’s comprehensive treatment.
Meshack’s medical plan includes chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and ongoing supportive care, all of which require urgent and sustained funding.
Although the Ghana Medical Trust Fund’s full benefits package is yet to be formally rolled out, officials say the swift response reflects the organisation’s core mission—to offer timely, compassionate support when lives are at risk.
“This is the spirit of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund: hope that arrives in time,” the Administrator noted, emphasising the Fund’s commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian child is denied critical healthcare due to financial barriers.
The intervention has been widely commended as an example of responsive and humane leadership, with many highlighting that moments like this demonstrate that “Mahama Cares.”
