The Ministry of Health has officially welcomed the Orbis International Flying Eye Hospital to Ghana — a state-of-the-art aircraft that doubles as a mobile training and surgical centre.

The visit is part of efforts to strengthen eye care delivery nationwide and build the capacity of local health professionals.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to welcome the aircraft, the Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving eye health and preventing avoidable blindness across the country.

She commended the partnership between the Ministry and Orbis International, noting that the collaboration has already enhanced clinical capacity, provided advanced training for eye care professionals, and delivered sight-saving treatment to thousands of Ghanaians.

“The Flying Eye Hospital offers a unique platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building that will leave a lasting impact on Ghana’s health system,” Dr. Ayensu-Danquah stated.

The Deputy Minister highlighted Ghana’s steady progress in combating eye-related diseases, citing the elimination of trachoma and improvements in infrastructure and access to eye care services.

However, she acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in tackling cataracts, glaucoma, and uncorrected refractive errors.

Dr. Ayensu-Danquah further reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing these issues through key policy frameworks such as the National Health Policy (2020), the Universal Health Coverage Roadmap (2020–2030), and the upcoming National Eye Health Policy.

She also expressed heartfelt appreciation to Orbis International and its team of volunteer doctors, nurses, and biomedical engineers for their dedication to advancing eye care in Ghana through continuous collaboration and skill transfer.

The welcome event brought together representatives from Aviance Ghana, Ghana Airports Company Limited, Heads of Teaching Hospitals, and several healthcare specialists.

The gathering underscored the strong partnership between the Ministry of Health and stakeholders committed to promoting quality eye health services across the nation.
