NHIS working better under Akufo-Addo gov’t – Bawumia
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has lauded the significant advancements witnessed in Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.
In a recent interview with Africa Watch Magazine, Dr. Bawumia emphasised the Akufo-Addo-led administration's commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and accessibility across the nation.
Highlighting the strides made in NHIS coverage, Dr. Bawumia noted the expansion of benefits to encompass treatments for childhood cancers and hydroxyurea for sickle cell patients.
He also underscored the pivotal role of digitalisation in revolutionising healthcare delivery, citing the introduction of an NHIS app that enables Ghanaians to register, enrol, and renew their subscriptions using their Ghana card.
“The NHIS is working better under our government than it used to be. Besides resourcing it financially, we have also digitised it and linked it to the Ghana card,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He emphasised the seamless integration of NHIS services with the Ghana card system, simplifying access to healthcare for citizens.
Moreover, Dr. Bawumia elaborated on the government's efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility nationwide through digital platforms.
He revealed the successful connection of health facilities under the Ghana Health Service to a unified digital platform, facilitating communication and coordination among hospitals.
Currently, all teaching hospitals, regional, and district hospitals are interconnected, with plans to expand this network to over 90 per cent of all hospitals in Ghana by the end of next year.
