A potent herbal concoction known as Omama Herbal Mixture — laced with opioids — has taken Greater Accra by storm, becoming the latest obsession among the region’s youth.

Alongside it, Omama Koo Bitters, popularly dubbed "Odindin" (meaning "strong"), has also surged in popularity.

Selling for just GHS 5 per tot, the mixture is prized not for its supposed immune-boosting properties, but for its ability to get users high while making them feel sober.

According to several young patrons, the herbal drink mimics the effects of alcohol, enhances sexual performance, and prolongs sexual activity.

Manufactured by the Omama Herbal Group in the Ashanti Region, the concoction has become a sensation, spreading rapidly across the capital.

Investigations by Classfmonline.com revealed that, unlike traditional herbal medicines, Omama products are not limited to herbal shops.

Instead, they are openly sold alongside alcoholic beverages at bars and local joints across the city.

In areas like Pokuase, the herbal mixture is prominently displayed on shelves with alcoholic drinks, despite its packaging as a medicinal product.

When opened, the concoction emits a strong, pungent smell similar to antibiotics, but this has not deterred its youthful consumers, who take it with enthusiasm for the intense high it delivers.

One user who spoke to Classfmonline.com traced the rise of the product’s popularity, noting that when it first appeared, a bottle sold for GHS 20.

However, as demand and addiction among the youth grew, the price soared to GHS 50 per bottle.

According to him, Omama's appeal lies in its ability to intoxicate users without the telltale odour of alcohol, making it a discreet alternative for those seeking a buzz.

He described the feeling after consumption as a heavy, dull intoxication.
