2024 elections: Hold presidential primary ahead of all elections-Kwabena Agyepong to NPP

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former presidential candidate and senior advisor to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the 2024 campaign, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise its presidential primaries ahead of all other internal elections.
In a memorandum dated 17 April 2025, addressed to the NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee, chaired by Frank Davies, Mr Agyepong proposed a number of constitutional reforms aimed at promoting internal cohesion and fairness.
Mr Agyepong advocated for the scrapping of Article 13(9) of the party’s constitution, which mandates the use of a special electoral college to reduce the number of presidential aspirants to five.
He argued that the existing process is undemocratic and vulnerable to manipulation, stating, “The current structure of this special college—comprising fewer than one thousand (1000) members—is susceptible to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness.”
To foster broader consultation in party decision-making, he also proposed the creation of constituency caucuses in each of the 276 constituencies.
These caucuses would include Members of Parliament, District and Municipal Chief Executives, Constituency Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, Polling Station Executives, Patrons, and Elders.
According to Mr Agyepong, this initiative represents “a limited enlargement of the electoral college, ensuring broader consultation and representation in key decision-making processes.”
In his proposals, Mr Agyepong emphasised the need for a more logical electoral sequence, recommending that presidential primaries be held before any other internal elections.
“This approach aligns with Article 13(1) of the party’s current constitution and promotes a more logical and less contentious electoral timeline,” he noted.
His suggestions come as the NPP begins preparations for internal restructuring ahead of the 2028 general elections.
