2024 polls: We’ll arrest Akufo-Addo as a fowl to handover-NDC warns
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong warning that it will resist any attempt by President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo to cling to power if the party wins the December 7 polls.
Mr. Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Operations for the NDC, emphasized the party’s readiness to take decisive action if necessary, stating, "We will arrest Nana Akufo-Addo like a fowl and force him to hand over power to the NDC."
Mr. Gbande stressed that elections reflect the will of the people, and if the electorate decides that the hardships imposed by the current administration are enough, the President must be prepared to leave office.
He added that elections are determined by the law and not by any underhanded tactics, warning that any attempt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to subvert the will of the people by handing over power to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would be met with firm resistance from the NDC.
He also criticized Mr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi Constituency, for his recent controversial remarks.
He further condemned Mr. Acheampong's statement that the NPP would win the upcoming elections "by all means possible" as irresponsible and urged the President to discipline his appointees to ensure a peaceful transition after the December 7 polls.
Mr. Gbande dismissed Mr. Acheampong's comments, stating that "people who brag have nothing up their sleeves" and warned that empowering individuals who make reckless statements disrupt societal peace.
Mr. Gbande suggested that the only reason President Akufo-Addo might refuse to hand over power is if he has something to hide.
The NDC official assured that his party would adopt a defensive stance in response to these unguarded statements, and cautioned that any attempts by the NPP to undermine the electoral process would have serious consequences.
He also warned that if the President fails to take action against such behaviours, the NDC would be compelled to activate measures to counter any sinister plans from the ruling party.
He spoke in an interview on Accra-based Kessben FM on Monday, August 12, 2024
