#2024Polls: Bawumia’s concession, a significant step towards fostering peace – Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has lauded his main opponent, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for conceding defeat in the recently concluded general election, describing the act as crucial in reducing tensions and upholding Ghana’s democratic principles.
Delivering his victory speech at his campaign office on Monday, 9 December 2024, shortly after being declared the winner by the Electoral Commission, Mr Mahama acknowledged Dr Bawumia’s statesmanship.
“His concession was a significant step towards fostering peace during this critical moment for our nation,” the President-elect said.
Mr Mahama, who is set to return as President after securing 56.55 per cent of the vote, emphasised the need for unity and cooperation in the days ahead.
“This victory is not just for me or my party but for all Ghanaians. Together, we must address the challenges facing our nation and build a future that benefits everyone,” he added.
Dr Bawumia, who garnered 41.61 per cent of the vote, conceded defeat earlier on Sunday morning, extending his congratulations to Mr Mahama and calling for national unity.
His gesture has been widely praised by political analysts and citizens as a mark of political maturity and a commitment to the democratic values Ghana cherishes.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, declared Mr Mahama the winner of the elections, announcing that he had secured 6,328,397 votes compared to Dr Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes.
