#2024Polls: Chaos erupts over Ursula Owusu's breakfast distribution at Ablekuma West polling station
Tensions flared at the Assemblies of God Church polling station in the Ablekuma West Constituency of the Greater Accra Region on election day over the distribution of breakfast allegedly provided by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
The incident occurred when a pickup truck carrying food packs arrived at the polling station, prompting heated reactions from some voters.
Amidst hooting and shouting, the vehicle was swiftly driven away and is now parked outside the voting centre.
Occupants of the vehicle explained that the food was intended for polling agents and Electoral Commission (EC) officials, not voters.
“We just brought food for our polling agents and EC officials, but the NDC members are asking us to take the vehicle out,” said Doris Boakye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ablekuma West.
“The food is from Ursula Owusu. This shouldn’t create a problem because it’s not for voters.”
The breakfast distribution, however, sparked accusations of undue influence from some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose candidate, Kweku Addo, is contesting the seat against Owusu-Ekuful.
Police officers at the scene have stepped in to restore calm and ensure that voting proceeds without further disruptions.
