#2024Polls: Gunfire erupts at Ledzokuku collation centre amid tensions

Tensions ran high at the Ledzokuku collation centre in the Greater Accra Region late on election day when an altercation between military officers and National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters reportedly led to gunfire.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the confrontation began when a group of NDC supporters challenged the presence of about 15 military personnel, insisting that security at the collation centre was already being handled by the Ghana Police Service.
The situation escalated when military officers attempted to drive into the main collation area but were denied entry by police officers managing security at the centre.
The ensuing dispute reportedly led to gunshots being fired, sparking fear and chaos among party agents, election officials, and observers.
Although no injuries have been reported, the gunfire caused significant panic, temporarily disrupting the collation process. Security personnel from both the police and military worked promptly to restore order and ensure the safety of everyone present.
Electoral Commission officials have since assured the public that the collation of results is continuing without further delays, despite the disturbance.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but reports suggest that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the clash.
Calls have been made for the Ghana Police Service and the military high command to collaborate more effectively to prevent similar occurrences in the future, particularly during such critical electoral processes.
