Afenyo-Markin questions US deportee agreement, urges transparency and bold economic policies

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for greater parliamentary scrutiny and transparency regarding the government’s recent agreement with the United States on the repatriation of Ghanaian deportees.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin ESQ questioned the legality of the arrangement, insisting that any such agreement ought to be brought before Parliament for approval and ratification under Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution.
He cautioned against sidelining constitutional processes, stressing that Ghana’s sovereignty and dignity ought to be upheld in all international engagements.
“We cannot allow any government to enter into agreements that affect our people without parliamentary oversight,” he asserted.
“Ghana’s sovereignty must always be respected.”
The minority leader also highlighted the achievements of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, citing progress in education, industrialisation, job creation, and infrastructure development.
He contrasted these with what he described as the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration’s “slow pace” in delivering tangible results. He urged the President John Mahama-led government to take bold steps toward economic growth and employment generation.
Afenyo-Markin (MP) reaffirmed the minority’s commitment to holding the “super majority” accountable, emphasising that effective governance depended not on numbers but on substance, diligence, and dedication to the national interest.
“Our duty as the minority is to defend the people’s interest,” he said.
“We will not relent in demanding transparency, fairness, and responsible leadership.”
His remarks reflected a critical yet nationalistic tone, underscoring his belief in Ghana’s democratic institutions and the minority’s role as a check on executive excesses.
