The President of the Socialist Party of Zambia, Fred M’membe, has emphasised the urgent need for African unity, stating that the continent’s struggles against neo-colonialism and marginalisation can only be overcome through collective action.

Speaking at a conference, Mr M’membe lamented the continued discrimination, marginalisation, and domination of African people, despite the continent’s rich resources and youthful population.

He noted that Africa remains the poorest continent, with high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Mr M’membe stressed that the future of Africa’s young people is being shaped by the decisions and actions taken today, and that the continent must start planning for the future, taking into account its rapidly growing population.

He warned that Africa’s population is expected to dominate the world population within the next 50 years, and that the continent must prepare for the challenges that come with this growth.

The Socialist Party leader also highlighted the artificial nature of African borders, which were drawn by European powers during the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 without African representation.

He called for Africans to unite and challenge the neo-colonial structures that continue to hold the continent back.

Mr M’membe’s call to action comes as African leaders and activists continue to grapple with the challenges of achieving economic integration, peace, and security on the continent.

The African Union has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting economic development, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
