Aftermath of NPP primary: Afenyo-Markin to remain Parliamentary leader-Razak Kojo Opoku to critics
Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, Founding President of the U.P Tradition Institute, has stated that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin will continue to lead the party’s caucus in Parliament and retain the same level of support previously given to former Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
Speaking on the party’s future direction, Dr. Opoku stressed the importance of unity and strong leadership within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
He noted that the party would require competent and strategic executives at all levels to strengthen its grassroots base and improve electoral performance.
According to him, key national officers — including the National Chairman, First National Vice Chairman, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Women Organiser, National Nasara Organiser, as well as regional, constituency, electoral area and polling station executives — must possess strong mobilisation skills and the capacity to effectively resource party activities.
Dr. Opoku also underscored the need for effective communication, stating that the National Director of Communication should be intellectually adept, media-savvy, and capable of setting and countering political narratives.
He added that party representatives on radio and television programmes must be well-informed and rely on facts and data rather than rhetoric.
Referencing the amended constitution of the NPP, Dr. Opoku emphasised that the National Chairman remains the leader of the party at all times, not the flagbearer.
He therefore urged delegates to exercise caution in selecting the party’s next chairman, describing the role as critical to the party’s cohesion and success.
