Ahmed Ibrahim reaffirms Ghana–UK partnership for sustainable, resilient cities
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), has reiterated the government’s strong commitment to strengthening collaboration with the United Kingdom(UK) to advance sustainable urban development across the country.
He made the remarks when the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Dr. Christian Rogg, paid a courtesy call on him.
Mr. Ibrahim highlighted significant progress made under the ongoing Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme (GCIEP), a joint Ghana-UK initiative aimed at enhancing urban planning, climate resilience and infrastructure delivery.
According to the Minister, the programme has already recorded major milestones, including the development of comprehensive urban baseline data, a monitoring and evaluation framework, climate-risk mapping and climate finance mobilisation strategies. It has also supported the preparation of key feasibility studies to guide infrastructure planning and investment.
He emphasised that the partnership aligns with the government’s broader agenda to build well-planned, greener and safer cities that can withstand the challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change.
Dr. Rogg, on his part, expressed the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Ghana’s efforts to improve urban systems, strengthen local governance and promote climate-smart development.
Both sides reaffirmed their readiness to deepen cooperation as Ghana works towards creating more liveable and future-ready cities for its citizens.
