New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has led a high-profile party delegation to visit the party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard "Wontumi" Antwi-Boasiako, at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in the Eastern Region.

The delegation included former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, among other senior party members.

The visit comes days after Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour over illegal mining-related offences.

Security at the prison was tight during the visit as party leaders arrived to meet the incarcerated regional chairman. While Wontumi appeared unshaken, he looked visibly stressed.

The NPP leadership has maintained its support for Wontumi and has indicated that his legal team will pursue an appeal against his conviction.
