Dec. 7 polls: Ignore NPP's fanciful target of 500,000 votes gain in Volta – NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has called on Ghanaians, particularly Voltarians, to dismiss claims made by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Communications Director, Mr. Richard Ahiagba, who suggested that his party would capture 500,000 votes in the Volta Region in the upcoming December 7 elections.
The NDC described the claim as disconnected from reality, arguing that Mr. Ahiagba’s “grandiose” target highlights a misunderstanding of the region’s political dynamics.
The NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, stated that the NPP’s goal reflects a long-standing pattern of overpromising and underperforming.
Mr Agbleze referenced the NPP’s history in the region, noting past election results: in 2016, the NPP aimed to win 30% of the vote but garnered only 10.81%.
Similarly, in 2020, despite inflated projections, they managed only 14.14%.
Over the years, the party’s vote share has fluctuated without steady improvement—15.38% in 2008, 12.9% in 2012, 10.18% in 2016, and 14.14% in 2020—demonstrating a consistent struggle to gain traction in the NDC stronghold.
Given the Volta Region’s 1,023,147 registered voters, the NDC stated that securing 500,000 votes would require a level of support the NPP has historically lacked in the region.
The party asserted that Voltarians are well aware of the economic hardships the NPP’s administration has brought, citing rising living costs, unemployment, and currency depreciation as reasons why the NPP lacks credibility.
Mr Agbleze urged the NPP to focus on addressing economic challenges instead of setting unscientific electoral targets.
“Their penchant for making unrealistic projections only reinforces the disconnect between their rhetoric and reality,” he said, calling on Voltarians to reject “empty promises” and to support the NDC, a party he said has the true interests of the Volta Region at heart.
