Dec. 7 polls: NPP MP goes independent in Suhum

Mr Oboafo Kwadwo Asante

The sitting Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Oboafo Kwadwo Asante has officially announced his intention to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an Independent candidate. The announcement was made this morning, signalling a significant departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under whose ticket he currently serves.

Citing a lack of transparency, honesty, vision, and love within the NPP, Mr Asante stated that Suhum would be better served with his continued presence in Parliament, but outside the party’s banner.

He believes that the time has come for Ghanaians to move beyond partisan politics and focus on the country's development.

"The people and ancestors of Suhum are solidly behind me to contest as an Independent candidate," he asserted.

Mr Asante’s decision follows the NPP's recent parliamentary primaries, which he described as flawed.

He accused the party of using monetary inducements from the Jubilee House to manipulate delegates and secure a win for his opponent, Samuel Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa.

Mr Asante claims that this decision has left many voters in the Suhum Constituency dissatisfied and unwilling to forgive the NPP.
