Dec. 7 polls: Vote for fair, accountable leadership – Domelevo to Ghanaians

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has called on Ghanaians to vote for a leader who demonstrates fairness, accountability, trustworthiness, and respect for diverse opinions in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Speaking at a public forum on "Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance: The Role of Media" on Tuesday, 3 December 2024, Mr. Domelevo highlighted the critical role that ethical leadership plays in addressing governance challenges and ensuring national progress.
“I will entreat you all to vote for a leader who is a father…a fair leader, he gives things based on meritocracy, not because you belong to my party or tribe. He is fair, he rewards people who deserve to be rewarded. That is the father I’m looking for,” Mr. Domelevo urged, stressing the need for integrity and fairness in leadership.
He also raised concerns about the sources of political party funding, questioning the extravagant displays of wealth often seen among some politicians. He called for greater transparency in political financing to combat corruption.
“I have been worried about political parties’ financing, where do they get that money from? And you see the extravagance being displayed on TV. I wonder, at times, one MP you will hear he has built so and so. And I ask where did he get the money from?” Mr. Domelevo said.
He went on to compare the salaries of Members of Parliament (MPs) with his own when he served as Auditor-General, highlighting the disparity between their earnings and their apparent wealth.
"Trust me, no MP has a salary higher than the Auditor-General when I was in office. But there’s no way I can build one for you. I can only build by mouth. So there are definitely different sources that are not known to us."
Mr. Domelevo urged the media to play an active role in addressing these issues, emphasising that transparency is the key to combating corruption.
"Once people are watching, the corruption will cease to do some things that they do," he stated.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Domelevo expressed support for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and its call for a forensic audit of the national cathedral project.
He also backed the potential prosecution of the project’s board of trustees.
