The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has confirmed that the military security detail previously assigned to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has been officially withdrawn and replaced with police protection.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Dr. Omane Boamah clarified that the EC Chair is now under the protection of the Ghana Police Service, in line with standard security protocols for civilian public office holders.

“The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa, no longer has military protection,” the Minister stated.

“She has been provided with security by the Ghana Police Service following the withdrawal of military personnel.”

The move comes amid ongoing public interest in the security arrangements surrounding key electoral officials, especially ahead of the crucial December 2028 general elections.

While the Minister did not disclose the reasons behind the reassignment, sources within the security establishment suggest it forms part of a broader review of military deployments across non-military institutions, as the government seeks to streamline security operations and reinforce the police's constitutional role in civilian protection.
